After adolescence, Narendra Modi left home in 1969 and traveled to the Himalayas, Belur Math and other ashrams in the country in search of spiritual peace for about two years and then returned to Ahmedabad. The awardee arranged for Narendra Modi to stay at the Sangh office, Hedgewar Bhawan in Ahmedabad. The award winner recognized his talent, organizational skills and leadership abilities. He refined his speech style and gave him the mantra to realize his resolve to sacrifice everything for the Sangh.
Mukhopadhyay has written in his book that at that time Narendra Modi was very confused about his future. But Inamdar’s inspiration and guidance removed all his doubts. From making tea at Hedgewar Bhavan to cleaning and toiling hard in Sangh work, Modi along with Inamdar played an important role in building a network of thousands of young Sangh workers. Narendra Modi sometimes worked as a Sangh pracharak from room number 3 of the RSS office at Hedgewar Bhawan in Ahmedabad. Under the guidance of Inamdar, he got the opportunity to carry forward the basic mantra of the Sangh – organization, discipline and dedication.
Inamdar Laxmanrao Inamdar, son of a revenue officer.
Born in 1917 in Khatav village near Pune. His father was a revenue officer. One of his ten sons and daughters was also named Inamdar. Inamdar received law education from Pune University in 1943 and joined the RSS. He also participated in the War of Independence and campaigned against the Nizam of Hyderabad, who refused to accede to India. As a Sangh pracharak, he also took a vow to remain celibate throughout his life.
There was a lot of respect and honor towards Inamdar.
Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, author of Narendra Modi’s biography ‘The Man’ (The Times), has written in detail about him. He told that Narendra Modi respected Inamdar a lot. He used to influence people with his words and tried to incorporate his personality in his life. Inamdar, the RSS’s provincial spokesperson, used to visit RSS shakhas in the 1960s and encourage youth to join the shakha. Modi was deeply impressed by his passionate speeches and style of presentation at his meetings in Vadnagar.
The personality of Inamdar, who was seen wearing white dhoti-kurta, had a deep impact.
Inamdar used to read books in his spare time and get information about the country and abroad from radio. At the shakha, Modi also learned Kabaddi, Kho-Kho and Yoga Pranayam along with other volunteers. Modi was deeply impressed by Inamdar’s simplicity and spirit of sacrificing everything for the sake of organization. After tireless work, Narendra Modi was made Sangh Pracharak in 1972.

That Inamdar inspired Prime Minister Modi to pursue further studies. Andy Marino, author of the book Narendra Modi: A Political Biography, also mentions that Laxmanrao Inamdar not only strengthened the foundation of the RSS in Gujarat but also changed its image by growing it into a giant tree. This made it an impenetrable fort of Hindutva. Whenever Modi was in a dilemma, Inamdar would show him the right path like a father.
Remain active even during emergency
The RSS was banned with the imposition of Emergency in 1975. Amid the arrest of Sangh workers, Modi and his guru Inamdar also went underground. They kept roaming around in disguise. Modi escaped arrest several times by disguising himself as a Sikh and a Sadhu. Many dedicated RSS workers spent time at home. He tried to keep the Sangh active during the Emergency. Due to which he was entrusted with a big responsibility. Modi was made the divisional campaigner of Vadodara district. Later in 1979 he became the pracharak of Panchmahal, Nadiad and Dong districts.
Inamdar died of cancer.
He was diagnosed with cancer in the 1980s. He died in 1984. But he continued to work for the Sangh throughout his life. Narendra Modi kept with him many books written by his guru. Before becoming Prime Minister in 2014, he had visited the Prime Minister’s House in 2001. At that time Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister and Modi was the National General Secretary of BJP in Delhi. On 18 August 2001, Narendra Modi visited the Prime Minister’s residence to launch the book of Guru Laxmanrao Inamdar. 13 years later, after becoming the Prime Minister, he reached the same Prime Minister’s residence.
