Grand Prix Jury Prize Awards: India's Payal Kapadia has created history at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Payal's film 'All We Imagine as Light' has won Cannes' second biggest award – Grand Prix – Jury Award. Payal became the first female filmmaker from India to win this award. Payal's film 'All We Imagine as Light' premiered at Cannes on 23 May. Then she received a standing ovation for 8 minutes. The story of the film is about two nurses living in Mumbai.
Payal, who went on stage to receive the award, said,
“Thank you very much. It was a dream for me to have my film selected in this competition. But winning an award here is beyond my imagination. Thank you. I am Miguel Gomes, a filmmaker from Portugal. I am in Cannes 2024. I have received the award for Best Director. I follow their words. I want to call the actors of my film on stage. I think this film would not have been possible without them. These are three women who have contributed so much to the film, and made it our own, thank you all.”
Payal further said,
“I am very nervous. So I have written something. Thank you Cannes Film Festival for bringing our film here. But it should not take another 30 years for the next Indian film to be screened here. I also thank my producers who supported the idea, because it takes a village to make a film, so this would not have been possible without my team and crew.”
Who is Payal Kapadia?
Payal Kapadia was born in Mumbai. She completed her primary education from Rishi Valley School in Andhra Pradesh. After this she returned to Mumbai. Here she graduated in Economics from St. Xavier's College. After this she did her Masters from Sophia College. After this he joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) to study film direction. Payal's mother Nalini Malini is India's first generation video artist.
Payal started her career with short films. She made her first film Watermelon, Fish and Half Ghost in 2014. This was followed by 'Afternoon Clouds' in 2015 and 'The Last Mango Before the Monsoon' in 2017. Payal also made the documentary 'And What Is the Summer Saying' in 2018.

'All We Imagine As Light' is a Malayalam-Hindi feature. The film stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chaaya Kadam, Ridhu Harun and Azis Nedumangad. It is the story of two nurses (Prabha and Anu).
