The President of the World Health Organization said this on Friday while addressing food insecurity and highlighting its role. Apart from this, it was claimed that 60 million people fall ill every year due to food-borne diseases. Apart from this, four lakh 20 thousand people are said to have lost their lives. In a video message at the Second Global Food Regulators Summit held in Delhi, Ghebresius said that our food systems are facing many challenges due to climate change, population, new technology, globalization and industrialization.
70 percent of those who die are under the age of five
The WHO Director-General said that 70 percent of those who die due to poor diet are children under the age of five. The WHO President further said that the food regulatory community has an important role in dealing with these global challenges. It emphasized the need for their joint efforts, as more than 30 million people cannot afford nutritious food.
Need help to have safe food
The WHO chief stressed that collaboration is essential to ensure safe food for all as the food system crosses borders and continents. The event was attended by Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Food Minister Prahlad Joshi, Health Secretary and FSSAI Chairman Apurva Chandra, Codex Chairman Steve Wren and FSSAI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) G Kamala Vardhan Rao.
