To achieve success in life and take right decisions, it is most important for the intellect to work in the right direction. But do you know that sometimes a person’s own mind becomes his biggest enemy? The great economist, strategist and guide Acharya Chanakya has described this situation in great depth in his famous work ‘Chanakya Niti’. According to Chanakya, there are some circumstances and mental demerits which completely lock the power of thinking and understanding of a person. When this happens, the person forgets the difference between good and bad, right and wrong and paves the way for his own destruction.
First reason: excessive anger which instantly destroys the intellect.
Acharya Chanakya says that anger is the mental enemy of man which first attacks his rational power. When anger dominates a person’s mind, he has no control over his words and actions. Any decision taken in anger always proves to be harmful. According to Chanakya Niti, an angry person loses his understanding of right and wrong and starts hurting his own people, therefore, when anger rises in the mind, the biggest protection is to remain completely calm.
Second reason: darkness of ego and over-confidence
When the feeling of ‘I’ i.e. ego is born within a person, his mind stops seeing the truth. According to Chanakya, an egoistic person feels that only he is right and the rest of the world is wrong or foolish. This over-confidence forces him to reject even the right advice of others. History is witness to the downfall of many powerful kings and scholars only because their ego had become the biggest enemy of their mind.
Third reason: The insatiable hunger of greed and avarice
Greed is a quagmire in which a fallen person can never come out. It is clearly written in Chanakya Niti that when the mind is filled with greed, the person completely forgets morality, values and human values. Blind greed for money, position or anything else makes a person commit such crimes and wrongdoings, which he is unable to compensate for in his entire life. A greedy person sees only immediate benefits, not long-term destruction.
Fourth reason: shackles of attachment and excessive attachment
Excessive attachment towards any person or thing can completely corrupt a person’s mind. Chanakya says that when we become blinded by someone’s attachment, we start considering his mistakes as right. The biggest example of this is Dhritarashtra’s blind love for his son Duryodhana, which led to the destruction of the entire clan. When the mind takes decisions only under the influence of attachment, then the understanding of justice and religion is completely lost.
Fifth reason: The fire of jealousy that burns within a person
Being jealous or jealous after seeing the progress and happiness of others is a vice which turns a person’s happy life into hell. According to Chanakya, the mind of a jealous person is always engaged in conspiracies to harm or humiliate others. In this process he wastes his own energy and abilities. A person burning in the fire of jealousy is never able to take the right decision because his entire focus is not on his own progress but on the downfall of others. Only by maintaining distance from these five mental enemies can a person keep his mind as his best friend.
