Film actor Govinda started his second political innings on Thursday. Govinda has joined Eknath Shindewali Shiv Sena. He is likely to contest from Mumbai North West seat. If this happens, Govinda will face Amol Kirtikar of Uddhav Thackeray's party Shiv Sena. However, CM Shinde has said that Govinda has joined Shiv Sena without any conditions. They will campaign for their candidates.
Have contested elections before also
Govinda entered politics many years ago. He entered politics in 2004. At that time he contested elections on Congress ticket and reached Parliament. Govinda had won the election from North Mumbai seat 20 years ago. Then Govinda had defeated BJP's many-time Lok Sabha election winner and veteran leader Ram Naik. However, Govinda later left politics and was accused of having links with Dawood.
Ram Naik made allegations
Veteran BJP leader and former UP Governor Ram Naik claimed that Govinda had taken the help of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and builder Hiten Thakur to defeat him from Mumbai North in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. He has also mentioned this in his book 'Charaiveti Charaiveti' (Grow). He has written in the book that Govinda was friends with Dawood and Thakur. Naik also accused a TV channel of helping Govinda in the elections by showing his films.
However, Govinda rejected the allegations and said that it was the people who made him victorious. On the allegations against him, Govinda said that I did not need anyone's support at that time. By saying such things, Ram Naik wants to say that the people of that parliamentary constituency were sold to the underworld. One should not insult anyone by saying such things.
After becoming MP, Govinda was among the top leaders who remained absent in the House, during which he did not attend Parliament for a single day. He did not attend the proceedings of the House even for a day. During his five-year tenure, he did not raise a single question in the House. When asked by reporters, Govinda said that apart from being busy with film shoots, his movement was banned after a fatal accident involving his wife and two children in Rajasthan a few years ago.
