The Central Government has issued guidelines for air passengers regarding the use of internet services during flights. The government on Monday clarified that passengers will be able to use internet services through Wi-Fi only after reaching an altitude of 3,000 meters during flight.
Permission to provide mobile communication services
It says that the use of electronic devices will be allowed only in aircraft reaching a height of 3,000 metres. The government has issued these instructions under the Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules, 2018. It allows provision of mobile communication services only after the aircraft reaches an altitude of 3,000 meters in Indian airspace.
This is to avoid interference with terrestrial networks
Such instructions have been issued by the government to avoid interference in terrestrial mobile networks. In this regard, the government has given instructions in the new rules announced. With this, the new proposed rule will now be called the Flight and Maritime Connectivity (Amendment) Rules, 2024.
It says, 'Internet services through Wi-Fi shall be provided only when the use of electronic devices in the aircraft is permitted irrespective of the minimum altitude in the Indian airspace specified in sub-rule (1).'
Government lifted restrictions in 2020
In early 2020, the government allowed airlines operating in India to provide free Wi-Fi services to passengers during flights. After this, the restrictions imposed on passengers during the flight were removed. The Civil Aviation Ministry said that passengers will now be able to use Wi-Fi during flights. But for this two conditions have to be fulfilled.
Captain will have the right to turn on or off Wi-Fi in flight
It was said that the captain will have the authority to turn on or off the Wi-Fi in the flight. Apart from this, the captain will also have to follow some guidelines. Since Wi-Fi will only work when the aircraft is at flight speed. It has to be closed during take-off or landing. Secondly, every aircraft providing such facility must be certified by DGCA.
