Mumbai: Wheat production in the country in the Rabi season of the current year is estimated to be 10.50 crore tonnes, which is 6.25 percent less than the government's estimate. The wheat crop is almost over.
India, the largest producer and consumer of wheat after China, has banned the export of wheat from 2022. India is dependent on bumper crops to increase stocks.
After assessing the crop situation across the country, wheat production in the current year is expected to be 105 million tonnes, an official of the Roller Flour Millers Federation of India said.
For the current Rabi season, the government has estimated wheat production at 11.20 crore tonnes. The government had claimed that the country's wheat production in the Rabi season last year was 112.7 million tonnes, but according to calculations from trade and industry sources, the production figure was ten percent less than the government's estimate.
Due to low production of wheat, the government is forced to supply wheat to flour mills and biscuit manufacturers from its buffer stock, resulting in depletion of wheat stocks with the government.
At the beginning of March this year, the wheat stock in government warehouses fell to 97 lakh tonnes, which is the lowest level since 2017.
In 2023, Food Corporation of India (FCI) purchased 2.62 crore tonnes of wheat from farmers, while the current year's procurement figure is expected to be around three crore tonnes. FCI has started purchasing wheat for the current season.
