What is the difference between expiry date, best before and use by? 99 out of 100 people don't know its exact meaning | News India

Have you ever seen expiry date, best before and use by written on any packet? You must have seen it, because whatever we use, something or the other is written on its box or packet. Expiry date is understandable, but most people do not know the meaning of best before and use by. If you are also confused about this, then do not worry, today we will explain these three meanings to you.

Usually people consider these three to be the same, but it is not so. All three have different meanings. Due to lack of correct information, we sometimes use things which should not be used. Especially medicines, makeup products and food items. If you know these three in detail, then you will never be deceived. So let us know what is the difference between them.

What is the expiry date?
The expiry date is the date after which the use of the product may pose a health hazard. This means that after that date the product may lose its quality, and bacteria or other harmful substances may grow in it. Usually the expiry date is written on medicines or such products, which are going to expire after 2-3 years.

What does best before mean?
Best before does not mean that the product will spoil after that date. It just means that the product will have the best taste, texture and quality ever. The product may still be safe after this date, but its quality may decrease slightly. For example, if a chocolate is marked “Best Before”, it means that the chocolate will be at its best taste and texture until that date. However, you can still eat it after that but the taste may change a little. But if an expiry date is written on a food item, then it should not be consumed after that date.

Who is it used by?
Use by, in a sense, is the last date it can be used or consumed. This means that the product must be used by this date, after which it will no longer be safe. It is like an expiry date. The 'use by' date is more important, especially on fresh foods and perishable goods. You may have seen it written on a packet of fresh salad or bread. Products with expiry dates tend to have a date instead of an expiry date.

For example, if a packet of fresh salad has “use by” written on it, consuming it after that date can cause health problems. Similarly, if makeup products have a “use by” label, using them after that date can harm your skin.
