How did the construction of the War Memorial to Unknown Soldiers begin?
The tradition of building war memorials for soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country began in France and Britain in the 1920s. Globally, this trend began after the Second World War. Today, more than 50 countries have such memorials, which have become a symbol of pride for the countries.
The graves built here honor the unknown soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. Even if their names are not recorded in historical documents, they are still remembered. Identifying the soldiers killed during the war was a big problem as many bodies were in very bad condition. Hence the tradition of building war memorials for such soldiers started.
These memorials are for national and individual mourning. War memorials exist as symbolic places for the families of fallen soldiers to honor their loved ones and for the nation to pay tribute to its heroes. The Unknown Soldier War Memorial in Russia commemorates the sacrifices of soldiers during World War II.
