Everyone knows about the life of Sanatan Dharma’s adorable and dignified Purushottam Lord Shri Ram, his ideals and his bravery, but have you ever wondered what Lord Shri Ram and Mother Sita used to eat in their daily routine in Treta Yuga? In today’s modern era, where people are fond of spicy, spicy and processed food, there is a very beautiful and inspirational description of Lord Shri Ram’s sattvik and natural eating habits in our mythological texts. On turning the pages of Maharishi Valmiki’s Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas written by Goswami Tulsidas, we come to know that Lord Shri Ram’s food was very simple, pure and close to nature, which was a symbol of his restrained life and high thoughts. Let us know what things Lord Ram, Lakshman and Mother Sita consumed in their food during Treta Yuga.
Authentic description of food is found in Maharishi Valmiki’s Ramayana.
The days of Lord Rama’s exile in Ayodhya Kand and Aranya Kand of Valmiki Ramayana have been described very minutely. When Lord Rama, following his father’s words, gave up the comforts of the palace for fourteen years and went to the forests, his royal diet changed completely. While fifty-six offerings and royal dishes were available in the palaces, their life in the forests became completely dependent on nature. He and his brother Lakshman used to eat tubers and fruits obtained from the forests as their main diet.
Roots, fruits and satvik food were the main food.
According to the scriptures, Lord Rama, Mother Sita and Lakshmana used to roam in the forests and collect plums, blackberries, mangoes, jackfruit, papaya and various types of wild tubers (fruits and roots growing underground). In that period, food was completely seasonal and purely organic. They depended only on naturally occurring forest fruits without harming any living being. For cooking, they used to collect wood in the forests and prepare food in a sattvik way like sages or sometimes they used to satisfy their hunger by eating raw fruits and roots.
How was Shri Ram’s food and drink in the royal palaces?
Even when Lord Rama was the prince of Ayodhya, his food was not very luxurious but was very satvik and energetic as per Rajarshi tradition. In the palaces they were served dishes made from pure cow’s milk, curd, ghee, honey, and various types of grains. Lord Rama always had a balanced and lean diet, which was the main basis of his physical and mental balance. His eating habits teach us that longevity and good health can be achieved only by adopting restraint and simplicity in life.
