Great cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has sharply criticized the poor performance of the Indian batsmen and the working style of the coaching staff. India suffered a 1-3 defeat in the recently concluded Test series against Australia, whereas earlier in the home Test series against New Zealand, the team had to face a clean sweep of 0-3.
Gavaskar’s sharp attack on the weakness of batting
Gavaskar said after the defeat in the Sydney Test that Indian batsmen have been struggling for some time. He also told that weaknesses in batting had started becoming visible since the New Zealand series itself. The Indian team has been able to cross 200 only three times in its last 10 innings.
Speaking to Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “Our team collapsed for just 46 runs against New Zealand. The team’s performance in the subsequent matches also remained disappointing. We saw the same in Australia also. “Did the batting coach and other coaching staff try to resolve this problem?”
Question on the role of coaching staff
Gavaskar directly talked about fixing the responsibility of the coaching staff. He said, “The time has come to ask questions to the coaching staff. What have you done? What steps were taken to improve the technique and mentality of the batsmen? Mere throwdowns do nothing.”
He further said, “It would have been understandable if our batsmen had struggled against world-class bowling. But the problem is that our batsmen are not able to survive even against normal bowling. It is time to hold the coaching staff accountable.”
Emphasis on preparations for the future
Gavaskar stressed on solid preparation for the England tour and improvement in Test cricket. He said that the performance of the coaching staff should be reviewed. “We raise questions on the future of the players. But should the coaching staff also continue? This question should also be raised.”
