Kolkata, July 25 (HS). A day after a heated argument between senior BJP leader Shubhendu Adhikari and Trinamool Congress MLA Tapan Chatterjee in the West Bengal Assembly premises, Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee on Thursday appealed to the MLAs to behave responsibly.
The officer alleged that the Trinamool MLA abused him and tried to attack him inside the Assembly premises.
In a letter to the Speaker, the BJP leader said he felt “unsafe” in the Assembly and demanded action against Chatterjee.
The Trinamool MLA, however, claimed she did not threaten or attack the officer but only sought an explanation for the remarks made against her and her daughter at an election meeting.
On the contrary, Chatterjee alleged, the officer threatened him with dire consequences when he sought an explanation for his remarks in the Assembly lobby.
Taking the incident seriously, the Speaker said that what happened in the assembly premises was unfortunate, unexpected and inappropriate. We should behave with restraint. We should behave appropriately as stakeholders of the assembly.
The speaker also referred to Adhikari's claim that he and other opposition MLAs were feeling unsafe in the House. Banerjee said there is adequate security in the House but public representatives should not act in a provocative manner. Adhikari was not present in the House when the speaker made the remark, but Chatterjee was there.
The speaker had said on Wednesday that he has started an inquiry into Adhikari's allegations. In his letter, Adhikari, the BJP MLA from Nandigram, also held the speaker partly responsible for the incident as he did not allow the personal bodyguards of the MLAs to enter the assembly.
