On Rakshabandhan, the holy festival of unbreakable love between brother and sister, the mood of the weather is going to change completely in many states of the country. Releasing the latest weather bulletin for August 28, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert of heavy to very heavy rain in 14 major states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. Due to the strong cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and the active monsoon trough, a new and intense phase of rain has started in the eastern, central and north-eastern parts of the country. In view of the threat of continuous rain and lightning strike on the festival day, the Meteorological Department has advised people to take special precautions while traveling and going out of the house.
The activity of monsoon winds is at its peak in the plains of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. According to meteorologists, on the day of Rakshabandhan on August 28, there may be torrential rains along with thunderstorms in the districts of eastern and Terai belt of Uttar Pradesh such as Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ghazipur, Azamgarh, Basti, Deoria, Bahraich, Gonda, Shravasti and the areas around Lucknow. Light to moderate rain and heavy showers are also expected in some parts of western UP.
Whereas in the neighboring state of Bihar, yellow and orange alert has been issued for severe thunderstorm and lightning in Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Purnia, Darbhanga, Katihar and East and West Champaran. The Meteorological Department has appealed to those working in open fields, under trees and in the fields to immediately move to safe permanent shelter during intense thunderstorms so that any loss of life due to lightning can be avoided.
The direct impact of the low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal is being seen in the coastal and interior districts of Odisha. Extremely heavy rainfall has been predicted in districts like Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack and Puri on August 28, with strong winds at speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour likely in coastal areas. Due to high waves in the sea, fishermen have been given strict instructions not to go into deep water.
Continuous drizzle and moderate rain will continue in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro and Santal Pargana divisions of Jharkhand. Apart from this, there are chances of intermittent heavy rains in the Gangetic regions of West Bengal, Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly and Siliguri and Darjeeling of North Bengal, which may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas.
In Madhya Pradesh of Central India, monsoon clouds will rain heavily in Bhopal, Jabalpur, Sagar, Rewa, Shahdol and Gwalior-Chambal divisions. East Rajasthan (Kota, Baran, Jhalawar, Udaipur, Jaipur) may also see spells of heavy rain due to local weather systems.
Due to heavy rains in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, there is a danger of landslides and falling of boulders in sensitive areas. Devotees and tourists traveling on Chardham Yatra routes have been instructed to keep an eye on the latest weather updates and avoid unnecessary night travel. An alert of moderate to heavy monsoon rain has also been issued in the northeastern states including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
There will be dense clouds in the sky on the day of Rakshabandhan in the national capital Delhi and adjacent NCR areas (Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad). There will be a slight drop in day temperature and there will be relief from humidity. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain and drizzle along with thunder in some areas during the afternoon or evening, due to which there may be slight disruption in the movement of sisters and brothers on Rakshabandhan or slow traffic at major intersections.
