After the cloud burst on the hill peaks, the water level of rivers and drains in the low-lying areas suddenly rose by several feet. The speed of the water was so fast that many mud-built houses, bridges and roads coming in its path were washed away in a moment. According to local eyewitnesses, people did not even get a chance to recover due to the sudden debris. Many areas have been completely cut off from the district headquarters, due to which there are difficulties in gathering accurate information about the affected areas.

Rescue operation of Army and NDRF continues on war footing

As soon as information about the accident was received, teams of Indian Army, Police, SDRF and NDRF were immediately deployed in the affected areas. With the help of the local administration, rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing to rescue the people buried under the debris and trapped in the flood waters. Seriously injured people have been admitted to nearby hospitals and medical camps. However, due to continuous drizzle and poor visibility, the rescue operation is facing a lot of difficulties.

In view of the geographical challenges and the warning of the Meteorological Department (IMD), red alert has been issued in all the hilly districts of Jammu division including Poonch, Kishtwar, Doda and Ramban. The administration has advised people living on the banks of rivers and mountain drains to immediately move to safe and higher places. Along with this, to deal with any emergency situation, control rooms have been set up at the district level and helpline numbers have been issued so that help can be provided to the stranded people as soon as possible.
