Shimla, September 6 (HS). Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Singh held a meeting with the operators of Gaushalas, officials of Animal Husbandry Department and other related departments at Hamir Bhawan here on Friday to discuss the current status of Gaushalas being operated in different areas of the district, infrastructural development in them, the problem of stray animals and other issues.
On this occasion, the Deputy Commissioner said that according to the data of the Animal Husbandry Department, 28 Gaushalas are being operated in the district at present, in which about 2285 animals are kept. Out of these, about 2071 animals of 26 registered Gaushalas have been given an amount of about 6 crore rupees at the rate of Rs 700 per animal every month through the Gauseva Commission. Apart from this, a separate provision of funds has also been made for infrastructural development.
The Deputy Commissioner said that the operators of all the Gaushalas are doing good work and some Gaushalas have become self-sufficient, but most of the Gaushalas are facing many difficulties in operating them. A comprehensive project will be prepared to overcome these problems and make all the Gaushalas self-reliant and connect them with agriculture and related activities. Suggestions of all the operators will also be included in this.
Amarjit Singh said that apart from the Animal Husbandry Department, the convergence of schemes of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Agriculture, Horticulture, Forest Department and other departments can create sources of income from cows along with infrastructural development in the Gaushalas. The possibilities of making the Gaushalas self-reliant through milk production, cow urine, cow dung gas, traditional fuel, earthworm compost, natural farming, development of pastures and water sources and other activities will also be included in this project.
The Deputy Commissioner urged all the operators to study and observe the arrangements of other Gaushalas as well and work towards continuous improvement in their Gaushalas as per the need. The problem of destitute animals was also discussed extensively in the meeting.
