Supreme Court on NRI quota: The Supreme Court has reprimanded the Punjab government on the issue of NRI quota in MBBS. The court made a strong comment on the NRI quota in medical admission and said that 'We should stop the business of NRI quota. This is a fraud. What are we doing with our education system!'

This fraud must stop: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court made this remark while dismissing a petition challenging the Punjab High Court's order quashing the notification broadening the definition of NRI quota for medical admission. During the hearing, CJI DY Chandrachud said, “We have to stop fraud. The High Court's orders are absolutely correct. If we look at its adverse effects, even candidates who scored three times the marks did not get admission. The central government should come in line.”

The Supreme Court also distanced itself from the Punjab government

In this case, Justice Chandrachud's bench also criticized the Punjab government and remarked that 'You have also included close relatives and dependents in the admission of NRI quota. This is fraud. You cannot give admission to meritorious students and you have given admission in the name of your NRI uncle, uncle and maternal uncle.' It is worth noting that last month the Punjab government had made this change in the NRI quota.

What is the whole matter?

Baba Farid University of Health Sciences has announced admission to medical UG courses on behalf of the state of Punjab and Chandigarh. The last date for UG quota is August 16 and for the state of Punjab it is August 15. The petition said that the state government had changed the admission process after the submission of the form on August 20. Apart from this, changes have also been made in the NRI quota rules.

In this regard, it is alleged that when seats in NRI quota were vacant, other candidates were given admission in MBBS through NRI quota.

MBBS general seats reduced

The petitioners have said in their petition that a notification was issued on August 22. After this, the NRI quota was increased to 15 percent. Allegedly, the MBBS seats of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences-Mohali were reduced. It was made NRI quota. Therefore, admission could not be done as per the announcement. They were changed midway.

Know how much is the NRI quota

At present, Punjab has 185 NRI quotas in MBBS and 196 in BDS. On the other hand, seats are already reserved for NRIs in medical colleges in Punjab.
