The formation of a new lake near the origin of Bhotekoshi river in Rasuwa district of the country has created a serious danger of ‘water bomb’ bursting in the low-lying areas. Nepal’s Hydrology and Meteorology Department (DHM) has received this important information from the Chinese government through the Ministry of External Affairs. Chinese experts estimate that the water level in this new lake is rising rapidly and the situation may become more dangerous in the coming days. This lake is formed in Nepal near the confluence of the Chochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers, which originate in Tibet and form part of the Bhotekoshi river system in Nepal. Coming on the heels of the recent devastating flash floods in central Nepal, this new threat has put officials on sleepless nights.
Emergency warning and political turmoil in Nepal
In view of the potential danger, the Flood Forecasting Division has issued a high alert for people living around Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river valleys. The administration has given strict instructions to citizens, tourists and rescue workers to stay away from river banks and remain completely alert. On the other hand, political activity has also intensified in Nepal to deal with this serious situation. At an all-party meeting convened by Rashtriya Swatantra Party president Rabi Lamichhane, leaders strongly recommended enhancing diplomatic dialogue with China and developing a sustainable and robust disaster management mechanism to deal with trans-border glacier-related threats.
High alert issued in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar also
In view of the devastation in Nepal and the looming threat of ‘water bomb’, the administration in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar has also become completely alert. High alert has been declared in many districts including Maharajganj and Kushinagar in UP and Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, West Champaran, Vaishali and Gopalganj in Bihar. In Maharajganj, many senior officials including Additional District Magistrate Prashant Kumar have been deployed in sensitive areas. The water level of Gandak and other rivers coming from Nepal is being closely monitored so that any emergency can be dealt with immediately and people in low lying areas can be evacuated to safe places.
