The government wants that the warranty should not start from the date of sale of the goods. Instead, the warranty should start from the date of installation. Even in November last year, the then Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar had written a letter to white goods manufacturing companies and industry organizations in this regard. Now once again the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has asked all the companies to send their opinion in this regard within 15 days.
White goods are items that need to be installed by experts. The customer cannot install it himself. Like TV, AC. The government says that the warranty period of electronic devices that need to be installed by experts should not start until they are installed. Sometimes such items remain with the customers for a long time without being installed. In such a case, when the warranty period starts from the date of sale, the customers suffer a loss.
Complaints are coming in
The ministry is receiving many complaints about companies not fulfilling warranty promises properly. In view of this, the ministry now wants a complete solution to this problem. The Central Consumer Protection Authority working under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs also held a meeting with the companies in this regard. The issue of warranty period was also raised in the meeting chaired by Consumer Affairs Secretary and Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare that it is wrong for companies to start the warranty period from the date of purchase. What should happen is that the warranty period should be calculated from the day of use of the device.
Khare said that customers should be properly informed about the warranty period while purchasing the product. They should be told when the warranty period will start. Companies should follow global practices in India too and resolve consumer complaints immediately.
The letter was also written in November 2023
In November last year too, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs had written to white goods manufacturing companies to amend their guarantee and warranty policy. The letter was written by 6 industry bodies namely CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM and PHDCCI and Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Blue Star, Kent, Whirlpool, Voltas, Bosch, Havells, Philips, Toshiba, Daikin, Sony, Hitachi, IFB, has written to companies like Godrej, Haier, Forbes and Lloyd.
