The first meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) constituted to discuss the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 is being held. The meeting will be chaired by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal at Parliament House Annexe in Delhi at 11 am. The committee will discuss the Waqf Bill today and submit its report to the government on the last day of the first week of the next Parliament session. Pal is a BJP MP from Dumariyaganj in UP.

After the uproar, the bill was sent to the JPC. The committee formed to discuss the bill included members of both the Houses of Parliament. It includes 21 MPs from Lok Sabha and 10 MPs from Rajya Sabha.

In today's first meeting, representatives of the Ministry of Minority Affairs will discuss the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 and the proposed amendments to be brought in it. Information related to various legal aspects will also be shared in the meeting. Officials associated with the Law Ministry will also be present in this meeting. Meanwhile, all the issues on which the opposition parties are protesting will be discussed.

Opposition parties opposed the Wakf Bill

In fact, keeping in mind the opposition's protests and demands in Parliament, the government has decided to send this bill to the JPC. The purpose of the JPC is to examine any issue, the provisions of the bill and give its opinion on it. Congress has called this bill anti-Muslim. Congress MP KC Venugopal called this bill an attack on the Constitution. Many parties including India Alliance opposed the bill in the House.
