Report says, condition of democracy is not good in many countries: Survey among voters in 19 countries
A recent report on the state of democracy around the world shows that voters in many countries do not want democracy but a strong leader free from the shackles of elections and parliament. Voters in many countries around the world are going through a crisis of confidence in democratic institutions. In 2024, about 25 percent of the world's population including America, India, Britain and the European Union will elect a new government. The International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) said after a survey that most voters are unhappy with the state of the democratic system. The IDEA report published on Thursday said that the condition of democracy is not good in many countries. Voters from 19 countries were surveyed for the report. It found that more than half of voters in 11 countries, including India and the US, believe recent elections were not fair.
Danish voters happy with democracy
According to the survey, Denmark is the only country whose voters believe that courts are always impartial in a democracy. In 18 out of 19 countries, more than half of the people consider the impartiality of the court questionable. Iraqis have more confidence in the justice system than Americans.
The largest number of supporters of any powerful leader is found in India.
Majorities of voters in eight of the 19 countries said they wanted a strong leader who was not bound by elections or parliament. The biggest supporters of a strong leader were found in India and Tanzania. There was low trust in elections in America.
Control of rumors is necessary for a good democracy: IEDA
Commenting on the report, IEDA Secretary General Kevin Casasa-Zamora said the confusion created by the public must be addressed. For this, administrative law should be amended and the entire system of spreading rumors that cast doubt on the credibility of elections should be combated.
1,500 people were interviewed in each country
1,500 people were interviewed in each of the 19 countries for the survey. The countries included in the survey include the largest democracies India, US, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Gambia, Iraq, Italy, Lebanon, Lithuania, Pakistan, Romania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Korea and Tanzania. According to the Perception of Democracy Report, less than half of the people in 17 countries are satisfied with their government.
