The United States of America, which is said to be the world’s oldest and most powerful democracy, is now witnessing a huge change regarding electoral reforms. US President Donald Trump has prepared a new and strict plan on the lines of India to make the country’s electoral process and voting system completely transparent. Just like in India, fake and ineligible names are removed through SIR and revision of voter list, on the same lines, now preparations have been started in America to completely clean the voter list. After this step of the Trump administration, the stir in American politics has intensified and it is being discussed all over the world that the US President has appreciated the Indian election management system and expressed his desire to implement it in his country.
Why did America need a voter verification system like India?
Referring to the impartial working style of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the world’s largest general elections, US President Donald Trump has raised a strong demand for passing the ‘Save America Act’ in the US Parliament (Congress) as soon as possible. Trump’s argument is that in a huge country like India, where there are more than 90 crore voters and more than 64 crore people exercise their franchise, elections are held entirely on the basis of photo identity card (Voter ID) and the use of postal ballot is very limited i.e. less than 1 percent. In contrast, in America, about 30 percent of the votes are cast through mail or postal ballot, for which Trump has been continuously alleging rigging and fraud.
What will change with the ‘Save America Act’ and new rules?
The essentiality of electoral purity and voter identification is at the center of this new proposed law being brought by Trump. Under this new plan, preparations are being made to make a valid photo ID card completely mandatory for voting in America. Also, citizens will have to provide solid proof of their citizenship at the time of voter registration. The main objective of this law is to ensure that the names of all those foreign immigrants, refugees and illegal infiltrators who can influence the electoral process are removed from America’s voter list. Like India, in America too, now a provision is being made to give limited special exemption only to the seriously ill, disabled or those posted on extremely important government duty.
Conflict broke out in American politics and opposition parties protested
As soon as Donald Trump announced the introduction of this strict law citing India’s electoral system, a heated debate broke out in American political circles. The ruling and Republican camps believe that this will prevent irregularities in elections and strengthen the democratic system. On the other hand, the opposition Democratic Party and human rights organizations say that this rule amounts to limiting the rights of voters and imposing strict restrictions. However, amid all these political upheavals, it has become clear that India’s strong and transparent election system has today become an example at the global level, from which even the world’s biggest superpower countries are being forced to learn a lesson.
