This month, it has been 20 years since the release of the cult classic film ‘Omkara’, which proved to be a milestone in the film career of Bollywood’s ‘Nawab’ i.e. Saif Ali Khan. The character of ‘Langra Tyagi’ played by Saif Ali Khan in this film based on William Shakespeare’s famous play ‘Othello’ is still remembered as the best villain of Indian cinema. On this special occasion, Saif Ali Khan has shared such a funny and unheard incident related to the shooting of the film, which has created a stir on social media. Saif revealed that director Vishal Bhardwaj wanted him to do a scene in the film without clothes i.e. nude.
When Vishal Bhardwaj said- ‘Can you shoot this scene naked?’
In an interview given to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’, Saif Ali Khan recalled that interesting incident. Saif told, “I remember a special scene related to the film very well. It was a long dialogue delivery scene, which I had to speak while standing in front of the mirror. During the shooting, suddenly director Vishal Bhardwaj came to me and asked me – Can you shoot this scene naked? This idea of Vishal was very exciting creatively, but I was a little hesitant because there was a lot of crowd on the set. Was present.”
Saif Ali Khan’s condition, after hearing which Vishal Bhardwaj backed out
On this strange and bold demand of Vishal Bhardwaj, Saif Ali Khan also immediately put a funny condition. Saif smilingly told Vishal, “If you can direct me without clothes, i.e. naked, then I am also ready to shoot this scene naked.” Hearing this wit of Saif Ali Khan, Vishal Bhardwaj laughed and immediately stepped back and said, “No, I am not going to do that at all.” Saif told that this incident was very funny and after this the atmosphere on the set became very light.
Had it happened today, I would have shot, Saif Ali Khan is now regretting this
Saif Ali Khan said a very shocking thing during the interview. He admitted that today he feels a little regretful about rejecting that nude scene. Saif said, “If I look back at that decision today, I feel that I should have done that scene as per Vishal’s advice. He could have shot it in a very artistic way by placing the camera towards my back. That scene would have looked very spectacular and different on the screen. Since a lot of new and experimental work is being done in cinema today, it would have been something very unique as per that time. If I had been in the same situation today. If he comes, I will do it immediately.”
The whole scene changed at the last minute, instead of dialogue a hammer was handed over.
Saif Ali Khan further told that there was another big twist in that scene. Earlier in that scene, Saif had to speak a heavy dialogue that ‘You have not made me Baahubali and now I will do this…’. But at the last minute Vishal Bhardwaj changed his entire plan. He came to Saif and said that you don’t have to speak any dialogue now, I have a new visual idea.
Changing the scene, Vishal told Saif that you will just stand in front of the mirror, the camera will follow you through a trolley. We will give a heavy metal or hammer like object in your hand and you have to break it by hitting it on the glass with full force. As soon as the glass breaks, your hand will bleed and the scene will end there. Saif said that he liked this idea very much and thus, without any dialogue, that very scary and cult scene got recorded in history.
