The violence was instigated by young supporters of Chapo’s rival and losing candidate, Venancio Mondlane. In this election, Chapeau got 65 percent of the votes, while Mondlane got 24 percent of the votes. Ronda said preliminary surveys showed that 236 incidents of violence were reported in the country in the last 24 hours.
The mob damaged 25 vehicles, 1534 prisoners escaped after the attack on the jail.
The Home Minister said that so far 78 people have been arrested and security has been tightened across the country. According to the National Police Commissioner, 33 people have been killed and 15 injured in the latest incident of violence. Apart from this, during the violence, 1534 prisoners escaped from a prison in Maputo, Mozambique. There were a total of more than 2,500 prisoners or convicts in the prison. The Home Minister said that 25 vehicles including two police vehicles have been damaged. While the mob attacked and vandalized 11 police posts and a jail, 1534 prisoners escaped.
