Violence broke out once again in Kangpokpi district of Manipur on Friday (03 January). District SP, M Prabhakar was injured in the clash between Kuki tribe protesters and central security forces. He suffered an injury on his forehead due to a weapon, after which he was admitted to the hospital. According to officials, protesters had earlier tried to stop security forces from removing bunkers from the hills, but the situation worsened on Friday when protesters took to the streets with automatic weapons.

The protesters were demanding removal of the deployment of central forces in Kangpokpi district and were also trying to disrupt transportation. A mob attacked the office of the Superintendent of Police of Kangpokpi district in protest against the removal of central forces from Manipur’s Saibol village. Saibol village is situated on the border of Imphal East district. Many people including SP Prabhakar have been injured in the attack.

The Kuki tribal organization had protested in Saibol village on December 31 against the alleged lathicharge on women by security forces. During this, the protesters expressed their displeasure over the deployment of central forces, especially the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The attackers pelted stones and threw other objects at the office of the Superintendent of Police, which also damaged the vehicles of the district police kept in the office.
