Kolkata: With politics heating up in the country regarding the Lok Sabha elections, the rule of law has once again weakened in West Bengal. After the Enforcement Directorate (ED), a team of NIA officers was attacked in Bhupatinagar, East Medinipur on Saturday. Two officers were injured in the incident while the NIA has arrested two people. Despite the attack on the Central Investigation Agency, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned the agency's investigation and asked why these people leave at midnight without informing the local police. They want to arrest all our booth agents before the elections. Mamta also accused the NIA team of attacking women in Bhupatinagar.
NIA team reached Bhupatinagar in East Medinipur to investigate the blasts. In a major development in the Bhupatinagar blast case, our team arrested two key conspirators in East Medinipur district despite resistance from the mob, an NIA spokesperson said. Balai Charan Maiti and Manobrata Jana were arrested after extensive searches at five locations including Manobrata Jana's house. He was produced before the special NIA court in Kolkata. When he was being taken, a crowd of local people gathered. The protesters allegedly tried to stop the NIA team from taking the two accused with them. Meanwhile, the angry mob allegedly threw bricks and stones at the NIA team. Two NIA officers were injured in the attack. Many NIA vehicles were damaged due to stone pelting by the attackers. Now the situation is under control. NIA has filed a complaint against the attackers in Bhupatinagar police station. There was an explosion in Bhupatinagar in December 2022. Trinamool Congress booth president Rajkumar Manna, his brother Devkumar Manna and Vishwajeet Gayen were accused of illegal betting. NIA team reached Bhupatinagar to investigate the incident.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee defended the attack on the NIA team. He asked, why did the Central Investigation Agency conduct the raid at midnight, will they arrest every booth agent? There was no need for the NIA team to go there in the middle of the night without informing the local police. Actually, all this is happening under a conspiracy and it was on the instructions of BJP that the NIA team came to Bengal. We want the Election Commission to work impartially and not as a BJP-run commission.
Mamata defended the villagers regarding the attack on the NIA team and termed the attacks as self-defense. Mamta said that this attack was not carried out by the villagers but by the NIA team.
If you enter someone's house at midnight, will women sit quietly? They will try to save themselves. Meanwhile, Governor CV Anand Bose has described the attack on the NIA team as a very serious incident. Attempts to attack investigating agencies will not be tolerated at all. Such attacks should be suppressed strictly. This kind of bullying should not be tolerated at all.
What is the matter?
In December 2022, three people were injured in an explosion at Rajkumar Manna's house in Bhupatinagar, West Bengal, who later died. In this incident, the police started investigation and registered an FIR against three people, but did not apply the sections of the Explosive Substances Act. As a result, a writ petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking transfer of the case to the NIA. Following the order of the High Court on June 4, 2023, NIA started investigating the case and registered a case under various provisions including the Explosive Substances Act. During the investigation, the NIA revealed the involvement of several accused including Manobrata Jana of Narobila village and Balai Charan Maiti of Ninaruya Analberiya. Jana and Maiti were involved in making crude bombs.
