Vinesh Phogat urges to announce trials dates, venue and format before 2024 Olympics

New Delhi, May 16 (Hindustan Reporter) World Championship medal-winning wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Wednesday urged the Union Sports Ministry, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and other concerned authorities to announce the dates, venue and format ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Trials. Paris Olympics 2024 will be held from 26 July to 11 August this year.

Vinesh took to social media to make this appeal to the Centre, WFI, Indian Olympic Association and Sports Authority of India (SAI). He first expressed happiness over India's victory over six 2024 Olympic quota places in wrestling and congratulated the quota winners.

Vinesh wrote on Twitter on Wednesday, “Dear well-wishers, thanks to your unwavering support and the dedication of our athletes, India has secured a total of six Olympic quota places in wrestling. I heartily congratulate the five remarkable women wrestlers and outstanding male wrestlers who have earned quotas for our country. “His hard work, sacrifice and victory have not only brought glory to Indian wrestling but have also inspired countless people across the country.”

He further wrote, “However, despite being just three months away from the Paris Olympics, the Wrestling Federation of India is yet to announce the official trials format including date, time and venue. It should be noted that all other federations have announced the qualification pathway and testing process with a clear format in December 2023 or latest January 2024.”

Vinesh said that at such a crucial juncture, all eligible wrestlers should have clarity about the Olympic pathway and process.

He said, “Such clarity not only ensures fair competition but also maximizes our country's chances of securing medals and excelling on the global stage. I request the Sports Ministry of India, IOA, Sports Authority of India and Wrestling Federation of India to give priority to this matter and immediately officially announce the dates, time, venue and exact format for the trials, after our athletes have fulfilled their quota. have worked tirelessly to achieve, and they deserve the assurance and support of a transparent and well-defined selection process. As we move forward with optimism, I request everyone to remain united behind our wrestlers and provide them the necessary support to shine in Paris. India ended its campaign at the World Olympic Wrestling Qualifiers held in Istanbul on May 12 with two Paris Olympics 2024 quotas, clinched by wrestlers Aman Sehrawat and Nisha Dahiya in men's and women's wrestling.

Nisha and Aman took the quota of Indian wrestlers to six. This competition in Istanbul was India's last chance to secure a Paris 2024 quota for wrestling.

Aman secured the 57kg Olympic 2024 quota, India's first in the men's freestyle category for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Nisha secured the second quota for India in the women's 68 kg category at this competition, making it the fifth Paris 2024 quota by an Indian female wrestler.

Antim Panghal (53kg) had secured the first quota for India during the 2023 World Wrestling Championships, while Vinesh Phogat (50kg), Anshu Malik (57kg) and Ritika Hooda (76kg) had won the Asian Championships in Bishkek last month. Kota was won during the qualifiers.

Meanwhile, India could not achieve a quota in Greco-Roman wrestling. Sunil Kumar, who won a bronze medal in the Asian Games last year, lost in the repechage round of the men's 87kg category.
