Latehar, 25 November (Hindustan Reporter). Local villagers blocked National Highway 99 for about five hours on Monday demanding compensation for land in Balumath block of the district. Later, after the assurance of compensation through the zonal officer, the villagers removed the road jam.
The villagers blocking the road alleged that three years ago, when National Highway 99 was being constructed from Chandwa to Bagramod, the land of the villagers along the road from Balumath to Makiyatand was acquired. At that time, assurance was given through the contractor and officials that the villagers would soon get compensation for the acquired land, but only assurance was given for three years. Under compulsion, the road was blocked as per the pre-determined schedule on Monday.
After receiving information about the jam, police and administrative officials tried to convince the villagers but the villagers remained adamant on their demand. Later, Circle Officer Vijay Kumar gave written assurance to the villagers that soon the compensation amount would be sent to the villagers’ accounts. After getting written assurance the villagers removed the road jam. However, the villagers have also said that if they are not given compensation soon, they will block the road again.
