Indian cinema’s great filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away on Monday evening at 6:30 pm. He was suffering from kidney problems for a long time. Recently on 14th December he celebrated his 90th birthday. Shyam Benegal was awarded the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. He established many talented actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Om Puri and Amrish Puri in the Indian film industry.

Shyam Benegal’s daughter told the reason for his death

Shyam Benegal’s daughter Pia Benegal confirmed his death, saying,
“Dad passed away at 6:38 pm at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai. He was suffering from serious kidney related problems for a long time. His condition had been continuously deteriorating over the last few years, and this became the main reason for his demise.”

Wave of mourning in the film world

The news of Shyam Benegal’s demise caused a wave of mourning in the cinema world. Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur paid tribute to him and wrote:
“Shyam Benegal was the man who changed the direction of Indian cinema through films like ‘Ankur’, ‘Manthan’ and countless such films. He made great actors like Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi stars. Farewell my friend and guide.”
