Famous actor Devraj Rai passes away: Veteran actor Devraj Rai died on Thursday night at the age of 73. He was suffering from kidney disease. The whole of Bengal is mourning the demise of Devraj Rai, who left his mark in various fields by serving as a news reader on stage, cinema and Doordarshan. His wife Anuradha Rai is also a popular actress.
Mamta Banerjee has expressed condolences on the demise of the actor.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the actor's demise and said, “Devraj Rai was a big name in the Bengali film industry. He worked in the films of famous directors and received appreciation. I knew him for a long time. He was a very gentlemanly person. My deepest condolences to his family.”
Devraj Rai was born on 9 December 1950. He started his acting career in 1970 with Satyajit Ray's film Pratidwandvi. After this he played a role in Mrinal Sen's 'Kolkata 71' in 1971. In which he got a lot of popularity.
Devraj also worked with famous directors of that era like Tapan Sinha, Tarun Majumdar, Vibhuti Laha. His performance in Tapan Sinha's film 'Raja' will always be remembered. Apart from this, in 1973, his pairing with Mitu Mukherjee in Dinen Gupta directed film 'Marjeena Abdullah' also won the hearts of the audience. The character played by him in the film and the song by Manna Dey are still popular among the audience.
Along with this, Devraj Rai showed his skills not only in films but also on stage. He was also very popular in reading news on Doordarshan. In 1976, he married actress Anuradha Rai.
Due to physical problems, he was away from the entertainment world for some time. His mortal remains will be taken to his residence in Bidhannagar for the last rites on Friday.
