Uttarakhand: Advice to take precautions regarding heat wave, temperature may increase in May and June

Dehradun, 26 April (HS). It has been advised to take precautions regarding heat wave in Uttarakhand. In Uttarakhand, the temperature is highest in the last week of May and first week of June. If there is lack of moisture in the upper atmosphere and clear sky, there is a possibility of heat wave conditions.

Regarding heat wave preparations, on Friday, Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) gave necessary guidelines regarding heat wave prevention in a state level training workshop. Officials from various departments of the state participated online in this workshop.

In the workshop, Meteorological Center scientist Rohit Thapliyal explained about the different phases of heat wave. He said that if the temperature reaches forty degrees in the plains and thirty degrees in the hilly areas, then there is a possibility of heat wave conditions. If the temperature at any two places remains four and a half to six and a half degrees above normal for two consecutive days, above forty degrees in the plains and above thirty degrees in the mountains, then it is considered a heat wave. He said that if there is prolonged presence of hot air at one place, lack of moisture in the upper atmosphere and clear sky, then there is a possibility of heat wave conditions.

According to Thapliyal, the Meteorological Department issues color coded warnings. In these, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red alerts are issued. Along with this, information related to what to do and what not to do is also shared for the common people.

It is important to avoid heat, take these measures

Dr. Sujata from the Health Department explained the measures to avoid extreme heat. Heat can also be fatal, so it is very important to take precautions. He told that due to heat, a person starts showing symptoms like extreme fatigue, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, body cramps, fast heartbeat, confusion etc. For this, it is important to drink plenty of water, keep drinking water even if you are not thirsty. Heat has the most impact on pregnant women, children, elderly and sick people, hence precautions are necessary. He told that during the summer season one should avoid going out of the house from 12 noon to 3 pm. Also, women should avoid cooking at this time.

It is important to take care of animals too

Dr. Vimlesh Joshi said that animals are in equal danger due to heat wave or extreme heat, hence it is equally important to take care of them. He said that do not leave children in a car parked in the sun, it can be dangerous. Also, do not sit directly in a car parked in the sun. Keep the doors and windows open so that harmful hot air can escape from the car.

Water bell should be rung in schools at an interval of one to one and a half hours.

USDMA meteorologist Dr. Pooja Rana said that to avoid heat, it is important to listen to the alerts of the Meteorological Department and follow the guidelines. To protect school children from the heat, water bells should be rung in schools every one to one and a half hours, so that children remember that they have to drink water.
