Australia’s new opener Sam Constas recently admitted that he tried to provoke Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah on the first day of the Sydney Test. However, his move backfired on the team when Bumrah took the wicket of Usman Khawaja on the last ball of the day.
What happened in Sydney test?
At the end of the first day of the fifth Test in Sydney, Australia’s batsmen wanted the day’s play to somehow end without any further loss.
- Usman Khawaja and Sam Constas planned to take over the game for the last 15 minutes.
- Khawaja deliberately tried to take time during Bumrah’s over, which angered Bumrah.
- Sam Constas, standing at the non-striker’s end, made the situation more tense by arguing with Bumrah.
After a heated exchange, Jasprit Bumrah clean bowled Usman Khawaja on the very next ball.
Bumrah’s counterattack
After taking the wicket, Bumrah stepped towards Constas to celebrate.
- Without saying anything, Khwaja and Constas bowed their heads and moved towards the pavilion.
- This incident proved to be a confidence boost for Team India, although Australia later won the match.
Constas’ statement: “It was my mistake”
Sam Constas spoke to Triple M Cricket on the incident:
“I argued with Bumrah, and unfortunately, Khawaja got out. He was trying to save time. Maybe it was my mistake. But it happens, it’s cricket.”
Constas also said that credit should be given to Bumrah for his brilliant yorkers.
Jasprit Bumrah’s impact and injury
In the Sydney Test, Jasprit Bumrah troubled the batsmen with his aggressive bowling.
- Bumrah gave an important wicket to the Indian team by dismissing Khawaja.
- However, Bumrah was not available to bowl in the final innings due to injury, giving Australia a chance to win the match.
