User has the right to know who is calling him, government can make it mandatory to display the name of the caller on the screen


New Delhi: The government can make it mandatory to show the caller on the phone screen. The government seems to be in favor of this proposal of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and a positive decision in this regard is expected. On this decision of TRAI, Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has said that both security and privacy of customers using mobile phones are important. Customers have the right to know who is calling them. The Union Minister has said that he will review this proposal of TRAI and after that a decision will be taken on it. At present, only the number of the caller is visible on the mobile phone.

Calling Line Identification Presentation (CLIP) service displays the caller's number on the phone screen. TRAI says that telecom companies will have to add name display service in CLIP. In countries like the US and United Arab Emirates (UAE), the name of the caller is already shown on the screen. UAE has made it mandatory to include a feature in the handsets sold here, with the help of which the name of the caller appears on the screen. However, this feature is already present in some mobile phones. According to TRAI's proposal, such facility will have to be provided in feature phones i.e. phones without internet.

Telecom companies will have to prepare data base

According to TRAI's proposal, telecom companies will have to create a master database to display the correct name on the screen. It will also be the responsibility of the telecom companies to show the correct name of the caller on the screen. Telecom companies can allocate their brand names to commercial customers.

Customers will be able to avoid obscene or fake calls

TRAI believes that the benefit of this facility will be that customers will be able to decide before picking up the phone whether they want to answer the phone or not. With this, customers will be able to avoid unnecessary calls, obscene and fraudulent calls. Many times customers ignore even important calls just because they get the number. However, the chances of this happening once the name appears on the screen are almost nil. Not only this, customers will also get relief from mental distress and financial loss caused by unnecessary calls.
