US President Donald Trump has openly praised the indomitable bravery and wisdom of Indian Captain Smit Machchhar of this flight going from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Israel. While talking to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, President Trump described the Indian pilot as a ‘hero’ and said that despite being seriously injured, the restraint he showed helped in averting a major plane crash.
This incident took place when the flight was passing over Jordan and Saudi Arabia and inside the cockpit, the Omani co-pilot suddenly attacked Captain Machar with a knife. Trump said that he received information about this incident from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, although he also clarified that he is mentioning these details only on the basis of initial reports and information received from Netanyahu.
Giving details of the incident, President Trump said that the condition of Indian Captain Smit Machar had become very critical due to the sudden attack by the Omani co-pilot. Despite this, he did not give up and despite being seriously injured, he succeeded in opening the cockpit door so that a call for help could be made outside.
Praising Captain Machar, Trump said that it is extraordinary for a pilot to maintain his senses and composure even in such an extreme and dangerous situation. He appreciated the important contribution of the Indian pilot in saving the plane from crashing.
Trump further said that after the cockpit door opened, another Israeli passenger on the plane immediately took charge. The passenger, a plumber by profession and with no technical experience in flying aircraft, reached the cockpit and pulled the attacker from his seat and threw him backwards. Trump also quipped that the passenger later revealed that he had learned some of the basics of flying by watching TV shows like ‘Air Disasters’.
After this, other security personnel and crew present at the rear of the plane also immediately took charge of the situation and completely controlled the accused co-pilot. Taking control of the aircraft, it landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The US President has termed this entire incident as extremely shocking and unbelievable.
