New Delhi, August 12 (HS). The United States on Sunday topped the medal tally at the Paris Olympics 2024 with a total of 126 medals including 40 gold medals, 44 silver and 42 bronze medals.
China was in second place with 91 medals, including 40 gold, 27 silver and 24 bronze medals. Japan was in third place with 45 medals, including 20 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals.
At the same time, the Indian team stood at 71st position with 6 medals, which included one silver medal and five bronze medals.
A contingent of 117 Indian athletes took part in the Olympics 2024. Manu Bhaker won India's first medal at these Games, earning bronze and becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in Olympic shooting. She then created history by becoming the first Indian to win two medals in the same Olympic edition with another bronze in the mixed team 10m air pistol with Sarabjot Singh. Her medal with Sarabjot was also the country's first team medal in shooting.
Swapnil Kusale won his third medal in shooting, India's biggest haul in the sport at a single Olympics. It was India's first medal in 50m rifle 3 positions.
The Indian men's hockey team replicated their Tokyo 2020 success by securing bronze in Paris. Neeraj Chopra further enhanced his Olympic legacy by winning a silver medal in javelin throw to become India's most successful individual Olympian.
Aman Sehrawat added his name to the medal tally by winning a bronze medal in wrestling, becoming India's youngest Olympic medalist.
Despite these achievements, India faced major disappointments at Paris 2024. The country missed out on six potential medals, with athletes including Lakshya Sen, Mirabai Chanu and Manu Bhaker, who were close to securing a third medal, finishing fourth in their events.
Also, the mixed team archery of Dheeraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat could not win a medal for India, losing the bronze medal match. But the archers created history by becoming the first archers from India to reach an Olympic medal match.
Apart from this, the star pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, despite being in great form, missed the medal after losing in the semi-finals of the men's doubles badminton.
Also, PV Sindhu failed to make it a hat-trick of medals in three consecutive Olympics. Veteran archer and multiple-time Olympian Deepika Kumari failed to return home with a medal despite immense experience and success in non-Olympic events.
Boxers Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain could not bring the much-needed medals to the country. Vinesh Phogat's disqualification just before the historic women's 50kg final also contributed to the country's woes.
