Nainital, 7 September (HS). Kumaon University Teachers Association (KUTA) has written a letter to the District Magistrate Nainital and urged him to take necessary steps to include Shri Nanda Devi Festival in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. KUTA has mentioned in this letter that since last year, due to the efforts of the District Magistrate, initiatives were taken in this direction, and this year the festival is being organized from 8 September.
KUTA President Prof. Lalit Tiwari and General Secretary Dr. Vijay Kumar have requested the District Magistrate to send a proposal with consent to the Uttarakhand Government to include Shri Nanda Devi Festival in the UNESCO World Heritage Site this year. They have also appealed to the MP and MLA of Nainital for cooperation in this direction, so that the world can become familiar with the unique cultural heritage of Uttarakhand.
Historical Significance of the Festival
The Shri Nanda Devi Festival started in Nainital in 1903, and has been organised regularly by the Shri Ram Sevak Sabha since 1926. The festival not only propagates the culture of Uttarakhand, but also gives the message of environmental conservation. The festival follows traditional folk customs, and uses eco-friendly materials, which help maintain ecological balance.
Along with religious events, Shri Nanda Devi Festival also works to connect cultural and human sensibilities with nature and faith. Through this festival, human values expand in the minds of people, which makes it even more important.
