UPI, Credit Card or Debit Card in Festive Shopping: Which will save you the most by paying after MDR postponement? Understand complete comparative mathematics

Confusion in the market has ended with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the government postponing the decision on 0.4% merchant discount rate (MDR) on UPI transactions above ₹2,000 till Diwali. Now there will be no deduction from the merchants’ pockets nor is there any risk of shopkeepers imposing additional charges on customers or asking for cash.

But when it comes to maximum savings on electronics, clothes, jewellery, smartphones and home appliances in the festive sale, the question arises that who should swipe or scan at the counter or online checkout? From a purely financial perspective, credit cards have always been the most profitable tools for the disciplined consumer, while debit cards and UPI are the safest for budget control.

If you are buying a TV, fridge, mobile phone, laptop or festive clothes, using a credit card gives you 3 big direct financial benefits:

  • Instant Bank Discount: In the festive sale, e-commerce platforms and big retail stores (Reliance Digital, Vijay Sales) are offering flat instant discounts ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹7,500 on credit cards of various banks (HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis). This discount is either not available on UPI or normal debit cards or is limited to a limited extent.

  • Additional Rewards: Apart from the discount, the card’s base reward points or 5% online cashback is credited separately.

  • Managing Cashflow: If you buy goods worth ₹50,000, that money remains in your bank account for the next 40-45 days, earning interest.

During the festive season, credit card swipe machines (POS) are not available at local sweet shops, puja items, lamps, flowers and neighborhood grocery shops. General Bank UPI is the fastest, convenient and secure mode for such transactions:

  • Zero interruption: No card or PIN required, just scan the QR code and payment is done.

  • Bank Security: For small transactions there is no risk of sharing card number, expiry date or CVV.

If you are shopping in the local market but also want credit card rewards and credit period without draining your bank account, then Making payment by linking RuPay credit card to UPI The most modern formula is:

  • You scan the QR code of any merchant with your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, CRED) and select your RuPay credit card instead of bank account in the payment source.

  • With this you also get the convenience of QR code and 1% to 2% reward back and 45 days loan.

The debit card is best suited for buyers who:

  • Want to stay completely away from the stress of credit card debt or billing cycles.

  • Those who are dominated by the tendency of spending more than the budget (Impulsive Buying) in the excitement of shopping.

  • However, the rewards on debit cards are negligible from a savings perspective, so use it only where the bank is offering a specific ‘Debit Card Festive Discount’.

  1. On every purchase above ₹5,000: First check the ‘Card Discount’ running on e-commerce or stores. Enjoy 10% instant savings by paying with an eligible credit card.

  2. Golden Rule (Pay the entire bill on time): The benefit of credit card is beneficial only till the time you repay it on the due date. 100% bill in lump sum Let’s pay. If you pay ‘Minimum Amount Due’ (MAD), the bank will convert your entire savings into loss by charging compound interest of 42% per annum.

  3. On local and everyday shopping: Use UPI without any hesitation as now there is no fear of any merchant imposing additional charges after MDR is deferred.

  4. Check Processing Fees in No-Cost EMI: If availing ‘no-cost EMI’ on a credit card, keep in mind that banks charge a processing fee of ₹199 to ₹299 plus 18% GST on top of that. Estimate the actual savings only after deducting this.
