A very relieving and big good news is coming for crores of farmers and agriculture sector of Uttar Pradesh, which will completely change the picture of the rural economy of the state. The much awaited project got stuck in papers and mutual administrative meetings for a long time. Kishau Multipurpose Dam Project Now finally the way for its implementation has been completely cleared. In the special presence of Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, Chief Ministers of six states, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, have officially signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this ambitious project worth more than Rs 15,000 crore. After this historic and cooperative agreement, the way has been paved for Uttar Pradesh to get huge amount of water for irrigation and drinking water, due to which a new happiness and glow is being seen on the faces of the farmers of the state.
Kishau Multipurpose Project is to be constructed on ‘Tons River’, the main tributary of Yamuna River flowing on the border of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Under this project, a huge concrete gravity dam about 232 to 236 meters high will be built on the Tons River, which will have very high water storage capacity. To end this decades-old water dispute, the Central Government has taken a historic decision by declaring this project as a national project and bearing the financial burden of 90 percent of its cost, while the remaining 10 percent will be borne by the states as decided by mutual consent. With the construction of this dam, not only will the states of North India get the benefit of hydroelectricity, but it will also prove to be no less than a boon for the plains which are suffering from severe water shortage.
As per the water sharing agreement, Uttar Pradesh has been allocated approximately 3.72 billion cubic meters (BCM) of water annually from this mega project. With the availability of this immense amount of water, the thirst of western parts of Uttar Pradesh as well as many other districts will be quenched and the fields will be able to get adequate irrigation. Farmers of more than half a dozen districts of western Uttar Pradesh, mainly including Saharanpur, Meerut, Shamli, Baghpat, Muzaffarnagar and Ghaziabad, will get ample water for farming. Along with this, through this scheme, easy routes are being prepared to provide water to Bundelkhand and other areas facing water shortage, which will also bring prosperity to the barren and unirrigated lands.
Due to better irrigation facilities in the agricultural districts of Uttar Pradesh, a tremendous increase in the production of paddy, wheat and other crops is expected. India is an agricultural country where even today farming on a large scale depends on monsoon rains, due to which farmers often have to suffer huge economic losses due to drought or lack of timely rains. After the Kishau project comes on the ground, farmers will not only get enough water for irrigation for twelve months, but will also see rapid improvement in the groundwater level. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also expressed happiness over this agreement and said that this step will prove to be a milestone in realizing the dream of ‘Developed India from Developed Uttar Pradesh’ and this will make the future of the farmers of the state more secure and prosperous.
Not only for irrigation and drinking water, but Kishau Dam Project will also prove to be extremely beneficial for the entire Yamuna Basin including Uttar Pradesh in terms of environment and safety. Through this dam, the rivers which swell due to excessive water coming from the mountains during monsoon and cause havoc in the plains of Uttar Pradesh, can be controlled to a great extent. Apart from this, during the summer months when the rivers start drying up and the water level in the Yamuna River becomes very low, the additional water released from this project will maintain the environmental flow. This will further give unprecedented momentum to the campaign to make Yamuna river clean and pure, which will ultimately contribute positively to the cleanliness of Ganga river in Prayagraj.
