Along with relief for the people facing severe humidity and heat in Uttar Pradesh, news of disaster is also coming to the fore. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a major monsoon alert for the entire state today, Monday, July 20, 2026. Due to a strong cyclonic circulation coming through Jharkhand and Bihar, a severe warning has been given in more than 33 districts of Uttar Pradesh regarding thunderstorm, lightning and torrential rains within the next 48 hours. If seen from a reporter’s perspective, on one hand this seasonal change will bring a drop in temperature, on the other hand it can also invite major urban problems like waterlogging and traffic jams.
Impact of cyclonic system: ‘Orange alert’ issued in these districts
According to the latest bulletin received from Lucknow Meteorological Centre, due to heavy movement of clouds and pressure of easterly winds, orange alert of very heavy rain has been activated in a large part of the state. The administration has also been asked to remain alert in these areas:

Major districts with very heavy rains: There is a possibility of strong thunderstorm with torrential rain in Maharajganj, Siddharth Nagar, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Bareilly, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur.

Heavy rain in eastern UP: There is also a strong alert of thunder and lightning in the districts of Varanasi, Prayagraj, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Mau, Ballia, Azamgarh, and Gorakhpur divisions.
How will the weather be in Lucknow, Noida and Meerut?
Even in the major cities of Western and Central Uttar Pradesh, clouds have been present since this morning. According to meteorologists:

Delhi-NCR and West UP: Moderate to heavy showers with thunder and lightning have been predicted in Noida, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Bulandshahr and Meerut.

Capital Lucknow and surrounding areas: The sky will be densely cloudy throughout the day in Lucknow, Hardoi, Unnao and Kanpur and there is every possibility of light to moderate rain with thunder at some places.
Relief will not be available till July 22, advises Meteorological Department
Atul Kumar Singh, senior scientist of Meteorological Center, Lucknow, said that this activity of monsoon is not going to stop yet. Monsoon will become more aggressive in both eastern and western parts during July 21 and 22, resulting in heavy rainfall in most of the districts of the state. In view of the increasing dangers of lightning, the Meteorological Department has made a special appeal to the people not to take shelter under trees, tall pillars or mud houses during the rains. Farmers in rural areas have also been advised to avoid going to the fields during bad weather and tie their cattle at safe places.
