Due to the deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal and moving towards Uttar Pradesh through central India, monsoon rains have taken a severe form across the state. Due to torrential rains in the last 48 to 60 hours, there has been record waterlogging in many cities of the state and many rivers are in spate. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh bulletin warning of thunderstorm, lightning and heavy to extremely heavy rain in the districts of Terai, Central and Eastern UP.
According to meteorologists, the depression system which moved through Odisha and Chhattisgarh is now concentrating over eastern and central Uttar Pradesh. Due to the movement of this system in the north-northwest direction, abundant moisture is continuously coming from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. This monsoon system is being continuously monitored through the Doppler radar of the weather center Lucknow. Due to its effect, there is a strong possibility of strong winds at a speed of 40 to 50 km per hour and thunderstorms in many areas.
IMD and Disaster Management Department have instructed sensitive districts to take special precautions:

Terai and Western UP: Red and orange alerts have been issued for extremely heavy rains in Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, Shravasti, Sitapur, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Rampur, Shahjahanpur, Moradabad and Bijnor. Due to proximity to Nepal border and mountain water pressure, the risk of flash flood has increased in these areas.

Central and Awadh region: There is continuous intermittent heavy rain and waterlogging in Lucknow, Kanpur, Unnao, Barabanki, Rae Bareli, Hardoi, Kannauj, Amethi and Ayodhya.

Eastern UP and Purvanchal: Torrential rain with thunder and lightning is expected in Gorakhpur, Deoria, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Basti, Gonda, Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, Ghazipur, Prayagraj and Varanasi.
Due to continuous rains, the water level of major rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Ghaghra, Saryu and Sharda is rising rapidly. A situation of waterlogging has arisen in low-lying and alluvial areas. In big cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Moradabad and Bareilly, roads have been submerged due to drainage overflow. Electricity supply has also been affected in many areas due to falling of trees and electric poles due to strong winds and lightning.
Seeing the seriousness of the situation, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed all the District Magistrates and Relief Commissioner’s office to remain on alert mode 24 hours. Pumping sets have been activated to set up relief camps in the affected districts and pump out water from waterlogged areas. In view of the alert of bad weather and heavy rain, instructions have also been issued to keep schools temporarily closed in many districts.
The Meteorological Department has appealed to the common citizens not to come out of their homes unnecessarily during bad weather. During lightning, do not take shelter in open fields, under trees or near electric poles and avoid traveling on waterlogged roads.
