Monsoon, which had weakened in Uttar Pradesh, has once again made a strong comeback. Due to the new weather system formed in the Bay of Bengal and the activation of the monsoon trough line, the weather pattern across the state has suddenly changed completely. While the people of the state who are struggling with the humid and sticky heat have got huge relief from this rain, on the other hand the Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a strict warning regarding severe storm, waterlogging and lightning. A double alert of rain and lightning has been issued in more than 60 districts of the state. According to meteorologists, this period of intermittent torrential rains will continue in the entire state for the next 48 to 72 hours.
According to Meteorological Center Lucknow, a cyclonic circulation is active over north-west Madhya Pradesh and adjoining south-eastern Uttar Pradesh. Along with this, the monsoon trough is passing from its usual place, which is pulling the moist easterly winds directly into the plains of North India. Due to moisture coming from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, a huge group of clouds has formed over Uttar Pradesh. Due to this conflict of atmospheric pressure and temperature, favorable conditions are being created not only for rain but also for lightning strike. For this reason, the department has directly advised people to avoid going out in the open for unnecessary work.
The Meteorological Department has issued an alert by dividing the western, central and eastern parts of the state into three separate zones. In most of the districts of Purvanchal and Awadh region, there is maximum possibility of heavy rain along with strong thunder and lightning. The districts for which alert has been issued mainly include Lucknow, Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Barabanki, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Basti, Sant Kabirnagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Amethi, Sultanpur, Varanasi, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Chandauli, Banda, Chitrakoot, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Badaun, Aligarh, Kasganj, Etah, Mainpuri, Agra, Firozabad, Etawah, Auraiya and Jalaun are prominently involved. There is a possibility of strong winds at a speed of 30 to 50 kilometers per hour in these areas and extremely heavy rain at some places.
Dense dark clouds have been present in the sky in the capital Lucknow and its surrounding areas since morning. The day temperature here has fallen by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius below normal, due to which the weather remains pleasant. However, intermittent heavy showers have led to waterlogging in low-lying areas of the city.
Heavy rain with strong thunderstorm is forecast in Kanpur and industrial belt. The rising water level in the coastal areas of Ganga is being monitored.
It is raining with strong winds along the ghats of Varanasi and Prayagraj. The Meteorological Department has warned sailors and bathers to be especially alert and not to go into deep water.
Monsoon is appearing most aggressive in Gorakhpur, Basti and Deoria belts. Due to continuous torrential rains here, contact roads in rural areas have started getting flooded.
Due to continued moderate to heavy rains in Bareilly, Moradabad and Agra of Western UP, people have got complete relief from the sticky heat.
Agricultural experts believe that this period of monsoon is proving to be a lifesaver for the paddy crop. The paddy crops which were on the verge of drying up due to lack of water, have got a direct lease of life from this rain. Apart from this, sugarcane and fodder crops will also get tremendous benefit from this rain. However, in areas where there is excessive waterlogging or where rainfall is accompanied by heavy thunderstorms, there is a risk of damage to crops of sesame, millet and seasonal vegetables (like ridge gourd, bottle gourd, cabbage, tomato). Agricultural scientists have advised farmers to make proper drainage arrangements in their fields and completely avoid working in the fields during rains in view of the danger of lightning.
After the warning from the Meteorological Department, the Relief Commissioner’s Office and the concerned district administrations have put the officials of all the districts on high alert mode. Municipal corporations have been instructed to immediately remove water from waterlogged intersections and colonies by installing pump sets. The electricity department has been directed to immediately repair the broken wires and fallen poles due to rain and strong winds so that loss of life like electrocution can be avoided. The health department has also asked to maintain stock of essential medicines to control cases of seasonal diseases that spread after the rains, such as dengue, malaria, diarrhea and viral fever.
The State Disaster Management Authority has issued a clear advisory for the common citizens to protect themselves from lightning. Never take shelter under tall trees, electric poles, transformers or tin sheds during bad weather. If you are in an open field and there is no place to hide, then instead of lying directly on the ground, sit on the toes of your feet and hide your head between your knees. Do not use mobile phones outside during lightning and unplug electrical household appliances. People working in ponds, rivers and wet fields in rural areas should immediately move to permanent houses.
Meteorologists estimate that this seasonal change is not going to stop for the time being. Due to the influence of another low pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal, moderate to heavy rains will continue intermittently in various parts of Uttar Pradesh for the next four-five days. Due to this, not only will there be a huge drop in temperature but humidity will also be completely eliminated. People are advised to keep an eye on the meteorological department’s nowcast radar updates and local administration guidelines before leaving for their destination.
