News India Live, Digital Desk: The special operation launched in Uttar Pradesh to search for missing people, especially women and children, has revealed shocking figures. Campaign Key Statistics (Data Insights)

Description numbers/figures
Total reported missing (01 Jan 2024 – 18 Jan 2026) 1,08,372
People ‘traced’ in special operation 88,022
Recovery Rate 81.22%

Why and how did this change happen?

Some major changes in the working style of the police and judicial pressure are behind this huge success:

Strict stance of the High Court: In early February, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court had expressed strong displeasure over the fact that out of 1.08 lakh missing people, the police took action against only 9,700 people. The court had described this as the “careless attitude” of the officials.

CCTNS Data Update: DGP Rajeev Krishna found that a large number of people had actually returned to their homes, but they were still appearing ‘missing’ on paper due to non-updation of police digital records (CCTNS).

Ground Verification: Special teams were formed in every district and police station. These teams went to the homes of the missing people and made direct contact and found that many people had returned on their own, but the family members had not informed the police.

Future Strategy: ‘Yaksha App’ and ‘Mission Vatsalya’

To avoid such situation in future, DGP has issued a new circular on 14 February 2026:

Yaksh App: Beat level constables will get real-time information about missing people through this app on their mobiles.

Mission Vatsalya: Complete details of missing children will now be compulsorily uploaded on the ‘Mission Vatsalya Portal’ of the Central Government.

AHTC’s intervention: If the investigation finds involvement of human trafficking or any organized gang, the case will be immediately handed over to the ‘Anti Human Trafficking Unit’.
