Uttar Pradesh Police has tightened its grip on cyber crime which is spreading rapidly in the digital age. State Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Krishna has informed that due to the promptness and prompt action of the police in the cases related to cyber fraud during the last one year, it has been successful in getting the huge amount of ₹ 635 crore present in various bank accounts ‘frozen’ (hold) in time. Presenting the annual report card of the state police on the occasion of Police Memorial Day in Lucknow, the DGP said that due to this timely intervention, the hard-earned money of thousands of innocent citizens across the state has been saved from falling into the hands of cyber thugs. Under the ‘zero tolerance’ policy decided by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a multi-pronged campaign is being conducted against organized mafia, drug smugglers and cyber fraudsters.
Saving the defrauded amount is the biggest challenge in cyber crime cases, because fraudsters transfer the money to multi-layer mule accounts within a few minutes. DGP Rajiv Krishna said that the network of cyber police stations and Central Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) established in all the districts of the state has been connected with financial institutions and banks through real-time API. As soon as the fraud is reported by a victim, the nodal teams of the police become active during the ‘golden hour’ (initial hours of the incident) and coordinate with the concerned nodal bank officers. The result of this quick financial blocking was that in the last 12 months an amount of ₹ 635 crore could be frozen in the banks before the fraudsters could withdraw it. Now, after completing the legal process in these cases, the work of returning this amount to the accounts of the victims through court orders is also being done rapidly.
On the occasion of Police Memorial Day, the DGP also shared details of the general law and order of the state and the steps taken against organized crime. He said that along with breaking the illegal economic backbone of big gangsters and mafias, crimes taking place at the street and locality levels have also been strictly curbed. Referring to the special operation launched against drug smugglers, he said that the police has completely destroyed 26 big criminal cartels. During this period, more than 6,000 drug smugglers were arrested and sent behind bars and more than 36,000 kilograms of illegal drugs were seized. The police did not just limit themselves to the seizure of narcotics, but the entire financial network of smugglers, properties and vehicles used in smuggling have also been brought under the purview of legal action.
Apart from law and order, Uttar Pradesh Police has also implemented a comprehensive action plan for road safety and reducing accidents. According to the DGP, due to strict compliance with traffic rules, identification of black spots on the highway, modern speed-camera monitoring and continuous public awareness campaigns, there has been a significant decline in the number of road accidents and deaths in the state. Punitive action taken against wrong-way driving and overspeeding on expressways and major national highways has helped in saving many precious lives.
UP Police has also set a historic national record on the front of digital technology and administrative efficiency. DGP Rajiv Krishna proudly shared that Uttar Pradesh Police Department has become the first police force in the entire country to successfully complete more than 1 crore courses on the Central Government’s ‘iGOT Karmayogi’ digital learning platform. Police personnel are being continuously given online training on sensitive topics like cyber investigation, modern forensic science, public dealing and human rights. This modern and continuous training system has seen a major improvement in the professional efficiency of the police force, resulting in the police responding to public complaints with greater sensitivity and technical efficiency.
