UP Panchayat Election: Demand to conduct Panchayat elections in UP on time, important hearing in Allahabad High Court today

An important Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed demanding holding of three-tier Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh within the time limit is going to be heard in Allahabad High Court today. A division bench headed by the Chief Justice will hear the case. The petition has urged the court to ensure that Panchayat elections are held on time to maintain the democratic system in the state, so that development work in rural areas is not affected.

What is the whole matter and the side of the petitioner?

This petition has been filed on behalf of advocate Imtiaz Hussain and his associates. The petitioners argue that the constitutional deadline for Panchayat elections in the state is approaching, therefore the State Government and the Panchayati Raj Department should complete the election preparations without any delay. Special emphasis has been laid in the petition that postponing or delaying the elections violates the democratic rights of the general public, hence administrative processes should be speeded up and voting should be conducted on time.

Stand of State Election Commission and Court

In this matter, Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission says that it is fully prepared to conduct elections on time. However, during the last hearing, the High Court had reviewed the administrative and constitutional formalities related to the election process. The court had sought responses from the Backward Classes Commission (OBC Commission) and the Panchayati Raj Department, so that there is no flaw in the reservation of seats and other legal procedures before the elections. The High Court wants to ensure that no legal hurdles arise after the announcement of elections.

Why is today considered important

The eyes of the rural areas and political circles of the entire state are fixed on the hearing to be held today. If the court issues guidelines keeping in mind the views of the petitioners and the State Election Commission, then the situation regarding the dates of Panchayat elections in the state will become clear to a great extent. This will provide a clear path to the Panchayati Raj Department and the district administration to finalize the election preparations.
