The Central Government has started work on a master plan to give a historic boost to the trade and economic relations between Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is soon going to construct a very ambitious and big project of the country, ‘Gorakhpur-Panipat Expressway’. This new Greenfield Economic Corridor, approximately 700 km long, will not only halve the travel time between Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, but will also provide a direct and seamless route bypassing the traffic of Delhi-NCR. From a reporter’s point of view, the commencement of preliminary survey of land acquisition for the construction of this expressway is an indication that a new chapter of development is about to begin between Purvanchal and Western India.

Fast Connectivity: At present it takes about 14 to 16 hours to go from Gorakhpur to Panipat. After the construction of this fully controlled four-lane (six-lane in future) expressway, this distance can be covered in just 7 to 8 hours.

22 districts will get direct benefits: This corridor will connect about 22 districts of Uttar Pradesh and main industrial areas of Haryana, making freight logistics between the two states extremely cheap and fast.

According to preliminary survey and route alignment of NHAI, this expressway is planned to pass through the heart of Uttar Pradesh to get maximum economic benefits:

Starting point and route: This expressway will start from Gorakhpur, pass through Sant Kabir Nagar, Basti, Ayodhya, Barabanki, Lucknow, Sitapur, Shahjahanpur, Badaun, Aligarh and parts of Moradabad division and directly enter Panipat in Haryana via Shamli and Baghpat.

Survey of land acquisition: Drone survey and digital mapping work has been started to identify agricultural and government land falling in the route of the expressway. District administrations have been instructed to expedite the paperwork for land acquisition.
New doors of industrial corridor and employment will open
Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Industrial Parks will be developed on both sides of this expressway costing more than ₹50,000 crore. The textile industry of Panipat and terracotta and agricultural products of Gorakhpur will get a big market in each other’s states.
There are also plans to set up logistics hubs, warehouses and food processing units along the expressway, which will create new employment opportunities for lakhs of youth at the local level. Apart from this, better connectivity will give a new strength to the expressway network of Uttar Pradesh (Purvanchal, Ganga and Bundelkhand Expressways), which will help in achieving the goal of the state’s ‘One Trillion Dollar Economy’.
