UP government introduces measures to deal with teacher proxy issues in schools

Lucknow : In an effort to curb teacher absenteeism and stop the use of proxies in Uttar Pradesh, photographs of all teaching staff will now be displayed on the walls of public schools. The Uttar Pradesh government has issued instructions to all the district basic education officers in this regard. These instructions make it mandatory for all teachers, including instructors ('Instructors') and para teachers ('Shiksha Mitras), to display photographs within classrooms, reports news agency IANS.

The display will include each teacher's educational qualification, date of joining the school, mobile number, assigned class and subject and any achievements such as state or national teacher awards. “Displaying photographs of teachers in schools will help students and administration to easily differentiate between genuine teachers and substitute teachers,” an official said, according to IANS report. “Implementation should not be difficult for schools, even with 10-15 teachers, as photographs will not require significant space,” he added. Funding for this initiative comes from the overall education outlay for the 2024-25 academic session.

The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated Rs 7.9 crore for teaching learning materials in primary schools and Rs 3.3 crore for upper primary schools under the Teaching Enhancement Program Remedial Teaching Scheme.

Additionally, these photographs will serve the purpose of informing parents about the identity of their children's teachers. This increased awareness will empower parents to raise concerns if a teacher is absent without a valid reason. It may be recalled that the State Government had earlier issued a similar order, but it was not followed in letter and spirit, hence the order has been issued again.
