City of Literature: Kozhikode in Kerala, known for its rich cultural heritage, was on Sunday officially declared India's first City of Literature by UNESCO. In October 2023, Kozhikode made it to the Literature category of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
State Minister MB Rajesh announced Kozhikode's achievement at an official function on Sunday. The minister said Kozhikode has bagged the 'City of Literature' title from UNESCO, beating cities with rich cultural history like Kolkata.
Gwalior of Madhya Pradesh made it to the prestigious list in the music category
Kozhikode has more than 500 libraries. It has been the centre of literary activities of renowned Malayalam writer MT Vasudevan Nair for several decades. Gwalior and Kozhikode are among the 55 new cities from India that have joined the UCCN. Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh made it to the prestigious list in the music category, while Kozhikode made it to the literature category.
Other cities in the world that have received the tag from UNESCO include Bukhara in the Sculpture and Folk Arts category, Casablanca in the Media Arts category, Chongqing in the Design category, Kathmandu in the Film category.
