Unemployment rate among highly educated youth in India is higher than that of less educated youth

New Delhi: It may be surprising to know that educated youth in India are more unemployed than uneducated youth. This claim has been made by a United Nations agency. The United Nations agency International Labor Organization (ILO) has said that the level of unemployment among educated youth in India is higher than that of uneducated youth. Also, the youth unemployment rate in India is also higher than the global level. ILO has published this report on its website which is named India Unemployment Report 2024.

In this report of ILO, an international organization established in 1919, it has been said that there are 83 percent unemployed youth in India. The report raises concerns about the lack of skills among Indian youth. According to which, 75 percent of the youth of India do not even have the skill to send emails with attachments. There is also mention of wages in the ILO report. The wages of people in India have remained normal or even decreased. Wages of workers and self-employed individuals have seen a negative trend since 2019, and unskilled workers did not even receive the minimum wage in 2022.

The ILO report has also raised questions on the Indian education system. The report claims that India's youth lack basic technology or digital education, making it difficult for them to find employment. 90 percent of Indian youth are unable to apply mathematical formulas in spreadsheets. 60 percent youth cannot even copy and paste files. 75 percent of the youth do not even know why files are attached in emails. Young women, especially those with higher education, are finding it more difficult to find employment than young men. Apart from ILO, this report has also been prepared by the Institute for Human Development. In which unemployment, skills or other skills of the youth have also been given attention. According to the report, the number of educated youth among all unemployed has increased from 54.2 percent to 65.7 percent. According to the report, 80 percent of the unemployed are youth who are looking for work. Of the total unemployed Indians, 65.7 percent are those who have received secondary education or higher education. In the year 2000, the number of such unemployed was 35.2 percent, which has now increased to more than 65 percent. Most of the youth are unemployed and have a bachelor's degree. This means that educated youth in India are more unemployed. There are more women in this also. The percentage of women not involved in employment, education or training in the year 2022 was 48 percent while the percentage of men was 9.8 percent. However, Union Minister Anurag Thakur has claimed that the figures of Indian agencies are different from the figures of the United Nations Organization.

More contract employment, less full-time jobs

According to the report, while contract employment has increased while full-time employment has declined, wages for full-time workers have remained stagnant or declined between 2012 and 2012. The report advises that to deal with unemployment, employment generation will have to be increased and skills will have to be increased among the youth. Besides, micro, small and medium enterprises will also have to be supported. Investment will have to be increased in areas where employment opportunities are more.
