UN supports FIFA's proposal to celebrate World Football Week annually

Geneva, May 24 (HS). FIFA announced on Thursday that the proposal to celebrate World Football Week annually has the support of the United Nations. World Football Day, which was initiated by Bahrain, Libya and Tajikistan and later adopted unanimously by 170 countries at the General Assembly earlier this month, has received such global support and is a testament to the unifying power of the world's most popular sport, football, and its ability to bring people and countries together.

The United Nations General Assembly celebrates the annual World Football Day on 25 May in recognition of “the global reach of football and its influence in diverse fields, including commerce, peace and diplomacy” and that football creates space for cooperation.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino called for a World Football Week to be held from 21–25 May and his proposal was supported by the United Nations and the Group of Friends of Football.

Infantino said in a statement, “I think this says everything about football's unique power to unite the world… I can only congratulate you, all of you and also the United Nations on this historic decision. Football really does unite the world!!”
