Kiev, August 15 (HS). A state of emergency was declared on Wednesday due to heavy shelling by the Ukrainian army in Russia's Belgorod border region. Ukraine launched drone attacks on four Russian military airports overnight. Russia's Voronezh, Kursk, Savasleka and Borisoglebsk airports were targeted. The aim of the attack was to weaken Moscow's ability to use warplanes for bomb attacks on Ukraine. At the same time, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the air defense system has destroyed 117 Ukrainian drones and four missiles.

Ukrainian troops have been attempting a large-scale incursion across the border into the nearby Kursk region for the second week in a row. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesman said his country had no intention of occupying Russian territory.

Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov described the situation in the region as “extremely difficult and tense” as the attacks destroyed homes and caused civilian casualties.

He said on his Telegram channel that children in particular were being moved to safer places. Gladkov said about 5,000 children were in camps in safe areas. He said yesterday that about 11,000 people had fled their homes, of whom about 1,000 were living in temporary accommodation centers.

Ukraine's surprise attack on Russian soil, which began on August 6, has shaken the Kremlin. Military analysts say Ukraine's Kursk operation is the biggest attack on Russia since World War II and may involve more than 10,000 Ukrainian troops equipped with armored vehicles and artillery. A state of emergency was declared in Kursk last Saturday.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that Russian troops, aircraft, drones and other equipment stopped Ukrainian armored vehicles from advancing deep into Russia near the Kursk settlements of Obshchi Kolodez, Snagost, Kauchuk and Alekseyevsky.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhiy Tekhayi said the cross-border operation was aimed at defending Ukrainian territory from long-range attacks launched from Kursk.

According to local media, Tekhayi said, “Ukraine has no interest in occupying the Kursk region. We just want to protect the lives of our people.” He claimed that Russia had carried out more than two thousand attacks from the Kursk region in recent months using anti-aircraft missiles, artillery, mortars, drones, 255 glide bombs and more than 100 missiles.

Ukrainian army commander Oleksandr Sirsky said in a video posted for President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday that Ukraine now controls 74 settlements in the Kursk region. He said Ukrainian forces were advancing steadily and had gained control of 40 square kilometers (15 square miles) of territory in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the local governor of Kharkiv said that since the attack in Kursk, Russian forces have reduced the number of guided bomb attacks on border settlements in northeastern Kharkiv, Ukraine. Also, a state of emergency was declared on Wednesday due to heavy shelling from Ukraine in the Belgorod border region of Russia. Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov described the situation as extremely difficult and tense. The attacks destroyed houses and caused civilian casualties.

Meanwhile, Russia has attacked energy facilities in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kiev's forces were gaining ground in Kursk and advanced another one to two kilometers on Wednesday. On August 6, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers entered Russia's Kursk region.

More than 100 Russian prisoners of war have been taken during this period. Ukraine's top commander Alexander Sirsky said that the Russian city of Sudzha, which is a transshipment center for Russian natural gas to Europe through Ukraine, is fully under Ukrainian control. Ukraine has claimed that 1,000 square km of Russian territory is under its control. A real dilemma has arisen for Putin.
