New Delhi, September 26 (HS). 10,000m Olympic gold medalist Joshua Cheptegei will participate in the 2024 Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon. Ugandan star runner Cheptegei retired from track events after winning the Paris Olympics and made it clear that he will now participate in marathons.
“Cheptegei will participate in the 2024 Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon in India. He will use the half marathon to better prepare ahead of bigger marathon events,” Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) president Dominic Otuchet told Xinhua.
Last weekend, the Ugandan star finished second in 45 minutes and five seconds at the 38th edition of the Dam tot Damloop 10-mile race in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Otuchet said Cheptegei would need to compete in a number of half marathon races to adapt quickly to road races.
“We are confident that Cheptegei will continue to improve in the road race because he is a determined and disciplined athlete who knows how to be a champion,” Otuchet said.
Cheptegei, Uganda’s only gold medallist at Paris 2024, will also set his sights on qualifying for the marathon at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships in 2025. To secure his place, he will need to run under 2:06:30 in a qualifying race next year.
